In the middle of this desert of volcanic earth lies Sarova Shaba Game Lodge; Kenya’s best-kept secret. Built-in an oasis around the natural terrain of this breathtaking volcanic desert, the Lodge is attractively laid out with chalet-style rooms overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River. Natural spring water has been harnessed to ribbon its way in and out all around the property creating a beautiful landscape. Coupled with the large free-form swimming pool that flows around the lush gardens and tall trees, all this refreshing water lends an almost magical feel to this natural oasis.
Sarova Shaba Game Lodge offers a unique experience that extends beyond game drives in the reserve. The lodge has a plethora of activities to indulge in, from bird watching to camel safaris, the viewing deck along the river, and feeding and watching crocodiles, making it a destination in itself.
On August 26, 2011, Sarova Shaba Game Lodge became the first game lodge within Shaba, Samburu, and Buffalo Springs National Reserves to be connected to the national electricity grid. Sarova Shaba Game Lodge previously ran on a diesel-powered generator.
Sarova Shaba Game Lodge is located in a natural oasis in the heart of the Shaba Game Reserve or “Born Free Country” that Joy and George Adamson called home for many years.
The lodge is 314 km from Nairobi, a 45-minute flight from Nairobi to Shaba or Samburu airstrip, or a picturesque 5-hour drive through the curving roads around Mt. Kenya crossing the equator at Nanyuki.
It is set along the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River laid out around the natural springs that flow into the river. The Lodge has a virtual mini forest of indigenous trees, a fish pond, and a large free-form swimming pool.
Accommodation options include a presidential suite, 4 executive suites, and 80 standard rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. The rooms are chalet style, on two-story thatched roof wooden structures. In addition, there is the main restaurant, bar, a pool bar at the swimming pool, and numerous bush and alfresco dining options. Meeting rooms are also available.
The Lodge has its own fleet of well-equipped safari vehicles with excellent guides, and the entire lodge is surrounded by a 24-hour double electric fence.
