Bird Safari Camp Georgetown

Location

Bird Safari Camp is a tropical paradise lodge set on the meandering river banks of MacCarthy Island in The Gambia. Deep in the African bush, this idyllic location provides a perfect base for the discerning traveler who is seeking a genuine experience, away from the crowded beach resorts.

Accommodation

Our spacious safari tents (see above) have two comfortable single beds with a bathroom area at the back of the tent which includes a wash basin, shower and WC. They have an electric fan & lighting and are located in prime positions overlooking the river. The traditional-style African cottages each have a double and single bed and are fitted with attractive locally made bamboo furniture. A ceiling fan is in the middle of the room and bathroom facilities are located towards the rear. Electricity, from our own generator, is supplied in the evenings.

Amenities & Services

Pearl Spotted Owlett, Abyssinian Roller, Violet Turaco and the beautiful Long-tailed Sunbird (our logo) are often sighted in and around the camp. The jetty (click here for picture) is a magical place. Let the monkeys on the opposite bank entertain you and watch the pied kingfishers at work (see picture) as they dance over the water’s surface. Many birdwatchers find it useful to hire the services of a local bird guide. Most guides are based down at the coast. However, you will find that many of them actually originate from villages further inland and they are usually very keen to travel up-country to show you the areas most people miss. Beware! Not all “guides” can tell the difference between a long-tailed glossy starling and a village weaver, so do be careful who you chose. See our bird watching section for more information and a list of recommended bird guides. If you have been to The Gambia and can add to this section, please e-mail us and we’ll pass on your recommendations. We are always keen to hear from you. Your suggestions help make this site a valuable resource for all. Relax and cool off by our 12 meter pool – the only swimming pool in the area – there is also a paddling pool for children to enjoy. Or enjoy a refreshing cold drink down by the jetty while you soak up the peaceful atmosphere of this tropical paradise. If you prefer to bring your own tent, a small section of the grounds has been set aside specifically for your needs. Alternatively, you may hire a 2 man dome tent including bedding. And if you’ve crossed the Sahara in your camping car (people do!), you’re also welcome! He has many years’ experience of catering to international tastes and cooks both typical African dishes as well as European cuisine. Enjoy a relaxing meal under the romantic light of lanterns sampling any of a variety of dishes from our delicious buffet. A vegetarian alternative is always available.
