Cultural Tour of Cameroon – 6 Days

Day 1: ARRIVE – DOUALA, CAMEROON

Arrive in Douala, Cameroon’s bustling commercial capital and the country’s gateway to the world. You will be warmly welcomed at the airport by your English-speaking guide,assisted with your arrival formalities, and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, your guide will conduct a tour orientation to introduce you to the journey ahead — the kingdoms, the cultures, the mountain landscapes, and the coastal heritage that make this 6-day circuit one of the most varied and compelling routes in Central Africa.

Day 2: DOUALA – BANDJOUN – BAFOUSSAM

After breakfast, depart Douala and travel west into the highlands of the Bamileke Region, one of Cameroon’s most culturally rich and densely populated areas. Your first destination is Bandjoun, home to one of the most important and well-preserved traditional chieftaincy complexes in the country. Visit the Chief’s Palace, a remarkable example of traditional Bamileke architecture, and tour its on-site museum which traces the origins, migration history, and cultural evolution of the Bandjoun people through artifacts, regalia, and oral histories. The museum offers a genuine and rare window into one of Cameroon’s most dynamic ethnic traditions. Continue to Bafoussam, the bustling regional capital of the West Region, for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: BAFOUSSAM – FOUMBAN – BANGOU

After breakfast, travel to Foumban — the historic seat of the Bamoun Kingdom and one of the most culturally significant cities in Central Africa. The Bamoun are renowned for their centuries-old dynasty, their distinctive Islamic-influenced architecture, and a remarkable tradition of arts and craftsmanship that continues to thrive today. Visit the Palace of the Sultan, an imposing and beautifully maintained royal complex that remains the seat of the Bamoun dynasty. The palace museum houses an extraordinary collection of traditional artefacts, royal regalia, ceremonial objects, and items documenting the kingdom’s history stretching back to the 14th century. Your visit will be accompanied by live performances from the palace musicians — an atmospheric and memorable experience. Explore the city mosque, a fine example of Sudano-Sahelian architectural influence in Cameroon, before spending time at the artisan market where master woodcarvers, basket weavers, and embroiderers sell their work — some of the finest traditional crafts available anywhere in the country. An ideal opportunity to find meaningful, authentic souvenirs. Depart Foumban in the afternoon and travel to Bangou for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: BANGOU – DSCHANG – BUEA

An early breakfast before departing for Dschang, a university town set on a high plateau at over 1,400 metres elevation. The altitude brings noticeably cooler temperatures and sweeping panoramic views across the highlands — a welcome contrast to the lowland heat. Visit the Dschang Civilization Museum, one of Cameroon’s most comprehensive cultural institutions, which traces the full arc of the country’s history from its earliest known peoples through the era of European discovery and colonization to the present day. It is an essential reference point for understanding the depth and complexity of Cameroonian civilization. Depart Dschang and descend approximately 1,200 metres through dramatic highland scenery to the Mbo Plains, before climbing again towards Buea in the South West Region — a town dramatically situated on the slopes of Mount Cameroon, the highest peak in West and Central Africa at 4,040 metres. Arrive late afternoon and overnight in Buea.

Day 5:BUEA – LIMBE –DOUALA

Begin the morning with a tour of Buea’s well-preserved German colonial architecture — one of the finest concentrations of late 19th-century German colonial buildings in Africa, dating from the period when Cameroon was a German protectorate. The town hall, government buildings, and residential structures from this era remain largely intact. Travel to Bonalyonga, the seat of the Paramount Ruler of the Bakweri people, one of Cameroon’s most distinguished coastal ethnic groups. If the King is in residence, you will be received for a courtesy visit — a privilege few visitors experience. If not, senior elders and cultural custodians will share the history, traditions, and oral heritage of the Bakweri people in a genuine and unhurried conversation. Descend to the seaside town of Limbe for a city tour, then stop at the Bakingili Lava Flow — the dramatic solidified lava field left by Mount Cameroon’s 1999 eruption, which reached the Atlantic Ocean and reshaped the coastline. A powerful and visually striking reminder of the volcano’s living force. Continue to the Bonangombe Slave Relic Site — a deeply significant historical landmark marking a route along which enslaved people were transported towards the coast and the Americas. This was a point of no return for thousands of people, and it stands today as a place of remembrance, reflection, and historical reckoning. Continue to Douala, with a brief city tour en route if time permits, before transferring to your hotel for the final night.

Day 6:DOUALA – INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE

Your final day is tailored to your flight departure time. Morning departure: Breakfast at the hotel, followed by check-out and transfer to Douala International Airport for your onward flight. Afternoon departure: After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive through the outskirts of Douala, passing the impressive Japoma Olympic Stadium and continuing along the Douala–Yaoundé highway through Dibamba to the historic town of Edea, before returning to Douala for check-out and airport transfer.
