BAGYELI PEOPLE & CAMPO MA’AN NATIONAL PARK – 9 DAYS

This 9-day expedition is the most comprehensive Bagyeli and rainforest experience available in Cameroon — and one of the most immersive indigenous and wilderness journeys available anywhere in Central Africa. It combines two full days in Bagyeli forest communities, three days in and around Campo Ma’an National Park, the legendary Lobé Waterfalls, the pristine beaches and turtle conservation of Ebodje, the cultural riches of Grand Batanga, and a final city tour of Douala before departure.

The Bagyeli are among Central Africa’s oldest indigenous forest peoples, semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers whose relationship with the rainforest spans thousands of years. Their music — a form of layered polyphonic singing unlike anything else in Africa — their forest architecture, and their living cultural traditions offer encounters that no standard safari or city tour can approach.

Campo Ma’an National Park is one of the continent’s great undiscovered wilderness areas: vast, ancient, and teeming with western lowland gorillas, African forest elephants, chimpanzees, and over 300 bird species. Three days here, including one full dedicated park day, gives travelers the time and space to experience the forest on its own terms.

  1. Day 1 : DOUALA, CAMEROON

    Arrive in Douala, Cameroon’s vibrant commercial capital and the country’s main international gateway. You will be warmly welcomed at the airport by your English-speaking guide, assisted with arrival formalities, and transferred to your hotel. Use the remainder of the day to settle in, rest, and prepare for what lies ahead — nine days through some of the most extraordinary forest, coastal, and cultural landscapes in Central Africa.

  2. Day 2:DOUALA –BOUMNYEBEL –ESEKA –LOLODORF

    After breakfast, depart south through the rolling Cameroonian countryside towards Lolodorf, passing through Edea and Eseka. Arrive in time for lunch before heading to your first Bagyeli community hamlet. The Bagyeli are one of Central Africa’s oldest indigenous forest peoples, semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers whose knowledge of the rainforest — its plants, its rhythms, its wildlife — has been accumulated across thousands of years of continuous forest living. A visit to a Bagyeli hamlet is not a staged performance; it is a genuine encounter with a way of life that has no parallel anywhere else on the continent. As evening falls, gather with the community for a traditional cultural performance. Bagyeli music is extraordinary — characterised by layered polyphonic singing, melodious harmonies, and hypnotic rhythms passed down across countless generations. Dinner is served al fresco under the open Cameroonian sky. Return to your hotel in Lolodorf afterwards.

  3. Day 3:LOLODORF –BIPINDI

    After breakfast, travel deeper into the forest to Bipindi, a village that offers even more intimate access to Bagyeli community life. Following check-in and lunch, visit a Bagyeli settlement to see their traditional forest homes firsthand — ingeniously constructed from natural materials and perfectly adapted to the surrounding rainforest environment. You may have the opportunity to meet with the village chief — a rare and memorable experience offering genuine insight into Bagyeli customs, oral tradition, and their profound relationship with the forest. The afternoon includes a range of cultural and recreational activities within the community. Dinner is served outdoors under the trees.

  4. Day 4:BIPINDI – LOBÉ– CAMPO MA’AN NATIONAL PARK

    After breakfast, depart southward through Kribi and continue to the coast for one of the tour’s most iconic stops: the Lobé Waterfalls — one of the only places on Earth where a waterfall cascades directly into the Atlantic Ocean.

    Watch the rushing water meet the sea at the forest’s edge, a sight that is as visually dramatic as it is geographically unique. Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at a beachside restaurant with sweeping Atlantic views — Kribi’s coastline is renowned for its grilled fish pulled straight from the sea.

    Continue south into the wilderness, crossing into the buffer zone of Campo Ma’an National Park as the forest deepens and the human settlements thin out. Check in at the lodge for dinner and overnight — your base for two full days of forest exploration.

  5. Day 5:CAMPO MA’AN NATIONAL PARK – FULL DAY

    A full day dedicated to one of Central Africa’s most biodiverse and least-visited wilderness areas. Campo Ma’an National Park protects vast tracts of ancient lowland Atlantic rainforest along the Cameroonian coast — a landscape of extraordinary ecological richness that remains largely unknown to international travelers.

    The park is one of the last remaining strongholds for the western lowland gorilla and the African forest elephant, alongside chimpanzees, forest buffalo, sitatunga antelope, and an exceptional diversity of bird species, reptiles, and plant life found nowhere else. Your licensed guide will lead you through the most captivating and rewarding sections of the forest throughout the day.

    Return to the Campo Lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

  6. Day 6 :CAMPO MA’AN NATIONAL PARK – EBODJE

    A second morning in Campo Ma’an for further wildlife exploration, with a particular focus on birdwatching. The park has been documented to host over 300 bird species, including several that are endemic to the Atlantic forest zone of Cameroon and rarely seen elsewhere. For wildlife photographers and ornithologists, this is a headline experience.

    Depart in the early afternoon and travel north along the coast to Ebodje, a tranquil and largely unspoiled fishing village that represents one of the most authentic coastal communities along this stretch of the Cameroonian Atlantic seaboard. Arrive in time for dinner and an evening immersed in the sounds and rhythms of village life by the sea.

  7. Day 7 :EBODJE – KRIBI

    After breakfast, travel along the coast to the striking Rocher du Loup (Rock of the Wolf) — a dramatic natural rock formation rising from the sea that has long served as a landmark for fishermen and coastal communities. Spend time on one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in West-Central Africa, walking the fine-grained golden sands in the quiet of the morning.

    Visit the Ebodje Turtle Museum, dedicated to the protection and monitoring of the sea turtles that nest along this coastline — a meaningful stop highlighting the community’s active conservation work.

    Following lunch, travel to Grand Batanga, a traditional coastal village whose community museum holds a diverse and fascinating collection of cultural artefacts, historical objects, and items reflecting the area’s rich maritime and ethnic heritage. Depart in the late afternoon for Kribi, check in to your hotel, and enjoy a free evening to explore the town or relax by the sea.

  8. Day 8 :KRIBI – DOUALA – CITY TOUR

    After breakfast, depart Kribi and return north to Douala, arriving in the early afternoon. Check in to your hotel and enjoy lunch before setting out on a guided city tour of Cameroon’s economic capital.

    Highlights include the Pagode of King Bell in the historic Bonanjo administrative district — a striking example of the fusion of Cameroonian royal tradition and colonial-era architecture. Continue through the Akwa business district, the commercial and social heart of Douala, passing the rond-point and the New Liberty Statue, before visiting the Doual’Art Museum, one of Central Africa’s most respected contemporary art institutions, which champions Cameroonian and African artists on a global platform.

    Your final morning is tailored to your flight departure time.

    Morning departure: Breakfast at the hotel, check-out, and transfer to Douala International Airport for your onward flight.

    Afternoon departure: After breakfast, your guide will arrange a final activity or leisurely morning before check-out and airport transfer. Carry with you the memories of the Bagyeli forest, the thundering Lobé Falls, the ancient trees of Campo Ma’an, and the warmth of Cameroon’s coastal communities.
