Day 1: Arrive Lagos, Nigeria

Touch down at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, where you will clear immigration, collect your luggage and pass through customs. Beyond the terminal, a warm welcome awaits from your professional cultural guide, who will transfer you to your hotel for check-in. Once settled, your guide hosts a relaxed orientation, walking you through the journey ahead and the experiences planned for your stay.

Day 2: Lagos → Badagry → Lagos

After breakfast, set out for Badagry, a historic coastal town west of Lagos near the Benin border. Founded in the early 15th century along a lagoon off the Gulf of Guinea, Badagry grew into an important port and, later, a significant center of the transatlantic slave trade — a point of departure for enslaved Africans bound for the Americas, including Brazil.

Your guided “Slave Route” tour traces this powerful history through the Old Slave Market, the Slave Trade Museum and its preserved artefacts and relics, the Seriki Abbas Compound (slave barracoons), and Gberefu Beach — the final point of departure for those carried across the Atlantic. Afterward, return to Lagos for a quiet, reflective evening at your hotel.

Day 3: Lagos City Tour

Continue to the Lekki International Craft Market, celebrated for handmade art, jewelry, sculpture, and traditional crafts — ideal for unique souvenirs. Next, the Nike Art Gallery & Cultural Center, West Africa’s largest privately owned gallery, fills four striking floors with over 10,000 works of contemporary and traditional Nigerian art. If she is available, you may meet Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, the internationally acclaimed textile artist who founded the gallery.

After lunch, visit the National Museum, Onikan, home to a remarkable collection of art and artefacts spanning Nigeria’s many cultures — archaeological, ethnographic, and artistic treasures, from statues and carvings to relics of the nation’s diverse peoples.

Day 4: Lagos → Accra, Ghana

After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport for your flight to Accra. On arrival at Kotoka International Airport, clear immigration, and customs, where your Ghanaian cultural guide will be waiting to welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to relax and unwind ahead of the experiences to come.

Day 5: Introductory Tour of Accra

Sharpen your bargaining skills at the adjacent Accra Arts & Crafts Centre, the city’s largest open market, brimming with authentic African wear, art, and crafts. Then enjoy a guided tour of Independence Square and the iconic Black Star Gate, where Ghana stages its great national ceremonies — a perfect place for memorable photographs. As the day winds down, a carefully chosen restaurant near your hotel awaits for dinner.

Day 6: Accra → Assin Manso → Cape Coast

Today is a deeply moving journey that will stay with you for years. Drive to Assin Manso, the burial site where the remains of two formerly enslaved people — from the United States and Jamaica — were re-interred in August 1998 during Ghana’s first Emancipation Day. At the Slave River (“Donkor Nsuo”), stand where captured Africans were washed before being held in the coastal castles to await shipment across the Atlantic.

Continue to the regional capital and the Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A guided tour of its museum leads to the infamous “Door of No Return,” one of history’s most powerful symbols of the transatlantic slave trade.

Day 7: Cape Coast → Kakum → Elmina

Depart at 8:00 am for Kakum National Park, one of Ghana’s most celebrated reserves. A gentle forest-floor walk reveals birds, butterflies, and a glimpse of the park’s 40-plus mammal species, including monkeys and the elusive forest elephant. Then ascend to the highlight: Africa’s only treetop canopy walkway — a 1,000-foot, seven-bridge crossing with platforms more than 150 feet above the forest floor.

In the afternoon, visit Elmina Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that held more enslaved Africans than any other in the region. Here you take part in the Fihankra ceremony, which reconnects people of African descent to their motherland — healing the cultural and spiritual ties severed by the transatlantic slave trade. The day closes with a naming ceremony at the Elmina Chief’s Palace.
