DAY 1: ARRIVE IN ACCRA–Friday, December 27, 2019

Arrive Accra, meet assist and transfer to the hotel.

DAY 2: ACCRA AND VICINITY (AFROCHELLA FESTIVAL)-Saturday, December 28, 2019

After breakfast and a brief orientation by your tour guide, you will visit the following places:

  • Visit the W.E.B. DuBois  former home , now a museum and  Center for the study of Pan Africanism
  • Drive through Flagstaff House, official residence and administrative offices of the president (Ghana’s Whitehouse).
  • Drive past the Independence Square on the way to visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
  • Tour of Historic James Town—one of Accra’s most historic neighborhoods, where history resides on every corner.  Best known for its lighthouses (the first of which was constructed in 1875 by the British) as a navigational aid for trading vessels sailing through the Gulf of Guinea. The original structure was ruined; however, a larger and more improved lighthouse completed in 1921 is still functioning today.  James Town is also known as Ghana’s boxing incubator, the home of Africa’s most accomplished boxer, Azumah Nelson.

Attend the popular and exuberant Afrochella festival, designed to elevate and highlight the thrilling and thriving millennial talent from Africa, the Caribbean and beyond. The day will feature a festive celebration of Ghanaian  culture in the form of Arts, Fashion,  Live painting, plus the best of Diasporan cultures and Live performances.

Return to the hotel with beautiful memories of a truly authentic African experience.

DAY 3: ACCRA – KUMASI – Sunday, December 29, 2019

After breakfast depart for a scenic drive to Kumasi the capital of the cradle of African culture- Ashanti Region. Kumasi may surprise you, being the most dynamic marketplace in West African and the second largest city in Ghana with a population of almost three million.

At the outskirts of Kumasi, visit the Ashanti Craft villages including:

  • The village of Bonwire, where the famous Kente cloth is handmade on looms in a time-honored tradition passed down through generations. See the Kente weavers in the process of creating Kente cloth in various intricate styles.
  • The village of Ntonso, where artisan’s hand-stamp patterns on cotton cloth to make Adinkra textiles.  Adinkra textiles are worn for funerals and other solemn occasions. Learn how the black dye is made from the bark of trees, and create your own Adinkra sash to take home.
  • The woodcarving village Of Ahwiaa, known for the talented craftsmen who fashion royal stools, fertility dolls and other crafts from wood.

DAY 4: KUMASI-Monday, December 30, 2019

After breakfast, optional Christmas service at a local church, before visiting the National Cultural Center which features the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and various studios of brass-makers, potters and batik makers.  Exhibits in this museum include a replica of the famed Golden Stool, which is believed to have descended from the sky and is the spiritual symbol of unity for the Ashanti people.

Next stop will be Manhyia Palace Museum to obtain firsthand information on the legacies of the Ashanti kingdom, a regal history that dates back to 1700 and is told with relics and artifacts.

Excitement mounts all through the Christmas period when many families get together for a special meal. Neighbors and even strangers are invited too; such is the nature of the famous Ghanaian hospitality.

Choose between celebrating with Local Ghanaian families to have a true experience of Ghanaian Christmas season celebration, or enjoy group dinner at a selected restaurant followed by lively entertainment including local hip life- an African fusion of rap, dance hall, reggae and Hip-hop that the locals go wild for or live band music of afro beats.

DAY 5: KUMASI  -ASSIN MANSO – ELMINA – Tuesday, December 31, 2019

After breakfast, depart to Cape Coast in Ghana’s Central Region. This region has had the most significant effect on the lives of Africans in the diaspora. We will pass through small villages and arrive at Assin Manso, the burial site of two former slaves from Jamaica and the US whose remains were re-interred here in August 1998 during Ghana’s first Emancipation Day Celebration.

See the “Slave River:” where our ancestors were washed before confinement in the slave dungeons to await shipment to the Americas.

On arrival in Elmina visit the harbor to enjoy the sights and sounds of the many colorful fishing boats bringing their daily catch and take the opportunity to interact with the locals at the nearby market. A short distance from the market, visit the boat builders, still building colorful fishing boats using traditional tools and methods spanning centuries.

Here you will find the perfect photo opportunities before continuing to your hotel where the rest of the evening is at leisure.

DAY 6: ELMINA – CAPE COAST- ELMINA – Wednesday, January 1, 2020

After breakfast, we will travel the short distance to Cape Coast dungeon, where we will experience the emotional journey of going in the opposite direction of our ancestors, through the infamous “door of no return”.  RETURNING through the “door of no return” be prepared to console your traveling companions as this is always an emotional experience.

Continue to visit Elmina Castle/Slave Dungeon- originally called Fort Sao Jorge de Elmina – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, completed in 1486 and was the first European made structure built in sub-Saharan Africa

This evening you will experience the traditional Fihankra Ceremony– “Restore to Diasporans the Cultural and Spiritual connections that were denied them for centuries”. The Fihankra Ceremony will include a traditional Naming Ceremony where you will receive your African name and certificate of authentication.

DAY 7: ELMINA (EDINA BRONYA- GHANAIAN CHRISTMAS)-Thursday, January 2, 2020

Today is dedicated to the authentic Christmas celebration as the locals do. Join in the celebration of Edina Bronya, which translates as “Elmina Christmas”. This Christmas celebration was introduced to the people of Elmina during the Dutch colonial period.  This is a period of purification, sacrifices to the gods, remembrance of the ancestors, and the welcoming of a new year. Families pour libations and invite friends to participate in dining and merry-making, throughout the towns (Cape Coast & Elmina). You will visit a few local families to celebrate and share experience.

Return to your hotel.

DAY 8: ELMINA – KAKUM – ACCRA- DEPART ACCRA, Friday, January 3, 2020

After breakfast and before you return to Accra, you will visit Kakum National Park, which has one of Africa’s famous rainforest canopy walkways.  This tropical rainforest and the canopy walkway are sure to be one of the highlights of your time in Ghana. The walkway consists of a series of 7 bridges, attached to 7 emerging trees, 40 meters above the rainforest floor. Prepare to take a deep breath as you walk the suspended bridges. You will marvel at the breathtaking views that stretch for miles across the rainforest as you rest on the tree platforms. We are sure you will agree that this is an exciting excursion never to be forgotten.

Upon arrival in Accra, you will also have the opportunity to experience some of Accra’s most authentic shopping outlets including Crafts, Carvings, Authentic African Art, exquisite fabrics and custom made clothing.

Day 1:  ELMINA- KAKUM-ADA FOAH, Friday, January 3, 2020

 

 Highlights:

  • Shopping Experience in Accra

Day 2:  ADA FOAH AND VICINITY- Saturday, January 4, 2019

  • Boat trip to the Mangroves and Island

After breakfast, morning at Leisure.

You may take walk around the resort which reminds most like a walk through an episode of Discovery Channel. If the well-mannered donkeys don’t amuse you, the friendly midget ponies will definitely get you posing for pictures.

A must-do at Resort is bird watching. From Flamingoes to Pelicans to all-white and colored peacocks to black swans and several other exquisite bird species, experience the calming effect of bird watching. You can even feed the flamingo!

Later in the afternoon, enjoy a boat trip to the Mangroves and Island to explore the work of the local gin producers on the Island who are committed to responsible tourism and environment protection.

In the evening, you will enjoy bonfire amidst local cultural performance at your resort.
