Day 2 NAIROBI/AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK | | After breakfast a short flight takes you to Amboseli National Park on the border with Tanzania begins your exploration of Kenya. Mount Kilimanjaro provides a dramatic backdrop to Amboseli as it rises almost 20,000 feet above the plain and the concentration of wildlife drawn to the park in the dry season. Amboseli boasts a variety of ecosystems – marshland, scrubby plain, acacia woodlands – supporting a diverse range of wildlife. Following lunch, you’ll spend the afternoon viewing some of this diversity, notably the park’s large elephant population, and giraffes, and predators including lions and cheetahs. Day Two features morning and afternoon game drives over the park’s dusty roads (some of these are impassable during the rainy season due to the ashy soil), You’re likely to spot wildebeest and zebra attracted to the marshes and swamps fed by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro. Day 4 SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE | | The morning flight carries you north across the equator into the shadow of Mount Kenya and the Samburu Game Reserve. The reserve lies in the rain shadow cast by the mountain across this part of central Kenya, though the reserve also includes woodlands, rivers, and marshes within its boundaries. Game viewing on Day Five includes opportunities to spot crocodiles and velvet monkeys (and perhaps hippopotamuses) on muddy riverbanks. Morning and afternoon game drives. Day 6 MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE | | From Samburu you fly to the land of the Maasai, Kenya’s cattle-herding people who remain proudly aloof from western civilization. The Maasai Mara Park itself is magnificent, home to Kenya's richest concentration of wildlife, and regarded by many travelers as an essential stop on any tour of Africa. When westerners think of Africa and safari, this is place they imagine. Morning and afternoon game drives will lead you to some of Africa's largest lion prides, herds of zebra, antelopes, buffaloes, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetahs, and hyenas. Day 8 LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK | | From Kenya we travel by air to Arusha and onto Lake Manyara - one of the gems of Tanzania. Bordered to the west by the dramatic western escarpment of the Rift Valley and to the east by the Lake which spreads out in a shimmering heat haze backed by a narrow band of forest and the sheer red and brown cliffs of the escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park covers an area of 318sq km. Its terrain is so diverse that its mammal and bird lists are some of the most impressive in Tanzania. Manyara offers abundant sightings of; monkey, jackal, mongoose, hyena, hyrax, zebra, hippo, warthog, buffalo, Masai giraffe, duiker, waterbuck and impala. Significant numbers of elephant are also resident in the Park whilst sightings of black rhino and leopard are not uncommon. Manyara is also especially noted for its wealth of bird life, being visited by many thousands of sugar-pink Lesser Flamingos, significant numbers of Greater Flamingos and a host of other woodland, plains and water birds. Day 9 NGORONGORO CRATER | | An early morning game drive is followed by breakfast. When the group is ready we depart for Ngorongoro Crater, a huge natural amphitheater created by the collapse of an ancient volcano. Inside its walls, we will see local Maasai herdsmen and their cattle amid a fascinating microcosm of East African wildlife, including buffalo, flamingo, lion and leopard. Next day we descend to the Crater floor to spend a full day game viewing with a midday break for a picnic lunch. More than 30,000 animals live in this enclosed grassland, including hippo that live in the central soda lake. The bird life includes ostrich, crested crane and egret. Day 10 NGORONGORO CRATER | | An early morning game drive is followed by breakfast. Day 11 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK | | Today’s destination is the world Famous Serengeti, a vast savannah plains where tens of thousands of hoofed animals. On game drives for the next two days we shall see them roam in search of the fresh grasslands upon which their survival depends. The million-plus wildebeest are the predominant herbivore and also the main prey of a huge cast of large carnivores, principally lion and hyena.
