Senegal & The Gambia, 9 Days

Visit colorful markets famous for a variety of medicinal herbs and traditional healers. Explore the picturesque residential district of Medina. See Pink Lake, the site of a rare natural phenomena which gives the lake its pink color. Be welcomed by the Chief and his wives in a Fulani village. Enjoy “canoe cruising," at Saloum Islands or just interact with locals whose hospitality allows you to share in their daily life of fishing, canoe excursions, and meals cooked over an open fire.

This tour has an additional departure on March 19th, returning on March 27th.

Depart the U.S. for your overnight flight to Dakar.

Day 2 (Tuesday) - Oct 21, 2008 -

ARRIVE DAKAR
Upon arrival at Dakar airport, you will be met, assisted and transferred to your hotel. Rest, relax and refresh. Afternoon city tour. Welcome dinner. Overnight at Novotel Hotel.

Day 3 (Wednesday) - Oct 22, 2008 -

DAKAR/GOREE ISLAND
This morning visit the World Heritage Site of Goree Island including "The Door of No Return". Tour includes a lecture by the curator on the history of Goree.

This afternoon complete the city tour of Dakar. Visit the colorful markets including Tilen Market, famous for a variety of medicinal herbs and traditional healers. Visit the picturesque residential district of Medina. Overnight at Novotel Hotel.

Day 4 (Thursday) - Oct 23, 2008 -

DAKAR/PINK LAKE/KAOLACK
Depart to Pink Lake, a rare natural phenomena caused by a unique combination of microorganism and high concentration of salts which gives the lake its pink color. Interact with the women harvesting salt; visit the Fulani village where you will be welcomed by the Chief and his wives. Continue to Kaolack which is on the way to The Gambia.

Day 5 (Friday) - Oct 24, 2008 -

KAOLACK/JUFFURE/BANJUL
After breakfast depart to Banjul. En route visit Juffure, the ancestral village of the late author of Roots, Alex Haley. Visit with the descendants of Kunta Kinte. Continue to Banjul for dinner and overnight

BANJUL CITY TOUR

Day 7 (Sunday) - Oct 26, 2008 -

BANJUL/SALOUM ISLANDS/DAKAR
After breakfast, return to Dakar with stops at the Saloum Islands where you may enjoy “canoe cruising" or just interact with a people whose traditional hospitality enables you to share their daily life of fishing, canoe excursions, meals of grilled over open fire. Continue to Dakar for overnight.
