Kilimanjaro Climb - Via Machame Route, 7 Days

Day 1

ARRIVE IN ARUSHA
International flight arrives in Kilimanjaro, you will be met, assisted and tarnsferred to your hotel

Day 2

BEGIN KILIMANJARO CLIMB
After breakfast, you are transported along with your guides and porters to the Machame Village. From the village walk up to the National Park entrance. Here your climb begins with a 6-hour hike into lush tropical rain forest. Walk through a dense forest of rubber and giant fig trees. You will see begonia flowers and other tropical vegetation. The tropical forest will give way to tall grass and giant shrubs. Arrive at your camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 3

KILIMANJARO CLIMB
This morning will be awakened at around 7:00am with a steaming cup of your favorite beverage.. Weather permitting, when you emerge from your tent, you will be greeted by a spectacular view of Uhuru Peak (located at the top of Kibo, the highest of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones). The day's trekking takes us up a steep track through a savanna of tall grass, volcanic rock and bearded heather. We will then encounter giant groundsels, impressive plants appearing as guardians of untouched treasures. The steep path will lead us through a ghostly landscape of volcanic lava, caves and foamy streams framed by giant groundsels. Arrive at the Shira Plateau, and later, after 3-4 more hours of trekking, at Shira Camp sitting at 12,598 feet. Total trekking time this day is about 6 hours.

Day 4

KILIMANJARO CLIMB
This morning the site to behold upon emerging from your tent is the entire Shira Plateau. Walk steadily up to the pass at Lava Tower (15,000 ft.) then descend towards Barranco Camp. The descent will take us along an immense canyon called Grand Barranco where we encounter the groundsels once again. There are numerous tiny waterfalls fed by mountain streams that converge here to form one river. Camp is set up here at almost the same altitude as the night before. Today's trek is again, about 6 hours.

Day 5

KILIMANJARO CLIMB
Today we slowly scramble up the Barranco Wall, arriving at the Karanga Valley for lunch. In the afternoon we continue along a moraine to an exposed ridge, the setting of Barafu Camp (barafu means "ice" in Kiswahili). Tonight retire early to be awakened at midnight for your summit bid. Total trekking time today is 7-9 hours.

Day 6

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - SUMMIT & BEGIN DESCENT
Today is the summit day! Your wake up call is at midnight for the final ascent. After about 6 hours of hiking, we arrive at the edge of the crater, Stella Point. In another long hour you will be at the summit, where sunrise will find you standing on the highest point in Africa (19,340 ft.). We then begin descent and walk for about 3 hours to Barafu Camp for rest and refreshments before continuing onwards to Rau Camp for overnight. Total trekking today is 14-18 hours.

Day 7

FINISH DESCENT & DRIVE TO ARUSHA / DEPART
The climb ends today as we descend back through the forest and return to the base of the mountain (about 5-7 hours). Upon arrival at the gate we have lunch before being transferred back to our hotel in Arusha with time for a welcomed hot shower, and rest before your early evening transfer to the airport for your flight home.
