Cape Coast
The Cape Coast Region is the location of several secondary schools, tourist attractions, beautiful hotels, excellent beaches and the Kakum game reserve. Traditionally a petty trading, cottage industry and fishing community, its population is now approaching 822,000, and many are employed in the government offices, schools, and tourist organizations that have grown up with the city. Cape Coast is home to old Slave castles used by Europeans to keep slaves just before they were transferred to the West Indies, South America and Americas.
The central Region is home to Slave castles with the most famous one being Elmina castle which was built in1492. And is believed to be the oldest castle built by the Europeans in sub –Saharan Africa. Central region is also home to the Kakum National forest Kakum Park is one of Ghana’s most famous parks. Kakum is also home to Africa’s only aerial walkway through the tree canopy, a 1000 foot long, seven-bridge walkway with viewing platforms that reach heights of over 150 feet above ground.
