The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial, Accra, Ghana

Kwame Nkrumah has the distinction of being both the first Prime Minister (1957 - 1960) and the first President (1960 - 1966) of Ghana.

Nkrumah was born in 1909 and died in 1972 at the age of 62. In his lifetime, he became a prominent Pan-Africanist. His influences included the likes of Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. DuBois, George Padmore, and other Black intellectuals of the time. Ultimately, he went on to form the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

After Ghana's government was overthrown by a military coup in 1966, Nkrumah went into exile in Guinea, where he continued his work in his vision for Ghana and Africa as a whole.

In 2000, Nkrumah was voted Africa's man of the millennium, and a large memorial stands in his honor in Accra. An on site museum chronicles his life and achievements.
