Tour of Senegal, West Africa 10-Days


Day 1 Arrive Dakar, Sénégal

Your flight  arrives in Dakar early  morning. You will be met, assisted and transferred to your hotel.
Late morning there is orientation, registration at the U.S. Embassy followed by a short city tour before this evenings welcome dinner.

Day 2 Dakar and vicinity

Today go on a city tour of Metropolitan Dakar. Visit the colorful markets including Tilen Market, famous for a variety of medicinal herbs and traditional healers. Visit the National Art Gallery and the picturesque residential district of Medina.

Overnight at Novotel Dakar or Similar

Day 3 Goree Island

This morning   board the ferry for the short sail to the historic and infamous Goree Island, one time departure point for millions of Africans to slavery in the Americas. Visit the  slave house, the Impressive Ifan Historical Museum of the Diaspora.  After lunch  visit the Medical Center and the Coranic school.

Day 4 Dakar and vicinity

Today you will visit the Cheikh Anta Diop University. Tour of the university, meeting with faculty and students of the English club (to be arranged)
After lunch stop at the Grand Mosque and the Soumbedioune Artisan Market where locally handmade crafts are on display.

Overnight at Novotel Dakar or Similar

Day 5 Dakar and vicinity

Today you will visit the West African Research Center. Discussions with faculty, staff and students.
Lunch at the centre with faculty, staff and students.


After lunch visit the traditional hospital of Malango located in Fatick area. Discussion with traditional healers and fortune tellers. Early evening return to Dakar.

Day 6 Dakar/ Pink Lake/Saint Louis

After breakfast, travel North to Saint Louis. On the way visit Pink Lake, a rare natural phenomena caused by a unique combination of micro-organism and a high concentration of salts which gives the lake its pink colour. Interact with the women harvesting salt then visit the nearby Fulani Village where you will be welcomed by the Chief and his wives. You may explore the dunes in 4x4 vehicles. Continue to Saint Louis where you will check into your accommodation for the next two nights.


This evening you will visit the fishing village of Guet Ndar where you see the distribution of the days catch, almost a daily ritual.

Day 7 Saint Louis/ Djoudj National Pack

Today we will visit Djoudj National Park and Bird Sanctuary, a UNESCO's World Heritage site. Enjoy a pirogue ride to better view the numerous bird species including cormorants, ducks and   various songbirds among others. You may also see crocodiles, boas and wild boars. Djoudj National Park is considered one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the world. Situated on a major palearctic migratory route, this park is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Some of the world’s greatest concentrations of white pelicans and flamingos can be seen here: up to 10, 000 of each species.


Tour of Saint Louis, the former colonial capital of Senegal, which still has the appearance of an old provincial town - circa 1800's. Explore the narrow streets flanked by houses with carved wooden balconies and verandas.

Overnight at The Residence or Similar

Day 8 Saint Louis / Touba / Saly Resort

After breakfast, depart to Saly Resort. En route stop at the Holy city of Touba which will be very busy because of the Friday prayer “Al Jumma”. Visit the grand mosque which is the largest and most beautiful in West Africa, visit the tomb of Cheikh Ahmadou Mbacke the founder of Mouridism (African brotherhood or African Islamic Movement) and the tomb of his 4 sons, visit the vast library of several thousands of books all written by the mystic founder and the legend of one of Senegal’s most important historical cities. You may collect some of the holy water from the eternal fountain and learn about the history and legend of Touba. After lunch continue to Saly Resort arriving early evening.

Overnight at Bougainvilleas or Similar

Day 9 Saly Resort/Joal Fadiouth /Dakar

Late morning drive up to Joal, birthplace of Senegal’s first president after independence, Léopold Sédar Senghor. Board a small pirogue to cruise along the oyster beds and mangroves to reach the grain stores.  Walk through Fadiouth’s lanes and visit the church, where Sunday mass is celebrated with  traditional African instruments. Return to the mainland by way of a wooden bridge 800 meters long.  Return to Dakar. This evening there is a farewell dinner with entertainment where you may display your artistic skills.

Day 10 Dakar/Depart

After early morning breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
