The land now known as Guinea-Bissau was once the kingdom of Gabú, part of the larger Malian Empire. The first European to arrive in Guinea-Bissau was the Portuguese explorer Nuño Tristão in 1446. Later the Portuguese in the Cape Verde Islands obtained trading rights to the territory and it became a centre of the Portuguese slave trade.
In 1974 Gabu gained its independence from Portugal and the new republic took the name Guinea-Bissau.
