Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive In Accra, Ghana

Arrive at Kotoka International Airport, transfer and check in to hotel.

You will drive through the administrative and economic areas of Accra, Ghana’s capital city. You will visit the W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture. Continue to Black Star Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial (the tomb of Ghana’s first President.

Drive by OSU Castle (also known as Christiansborg Castle), constructed by Denmark in the 1600s and which has been the seat of government from 1876 to the present.

*NOTE: Afternoon arrivals will visit these sites on Day 11.

Day 2 Accra City Tour

After breakfast departs on a full day sightseeing tour of Accra and vicinity. You will drive through the administrative and economic areas of Accra, Ghana’s capital city. You will visit the W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture. Continue to Black Star Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial (the tomb of Ghana’s first President. Pass by Independence Arch-Accra's ceremonial grounds.

Drive by Osu Castle (also known as Christiansbourg Castle), constructed by Denmark in the 1600s and the seat of government from 1876 to the present.

Continue to the National Theater to see a display of traditional instruments and carvings including "male" and "female" handcrafted drums. See the traditional crafts and other ethnographic displays at the National Museum.

Day 3 Accra / Volta Region

This morning before leaving to the Volta Region, visit to a local casket making shop to see a collection of caskets carved in the shape of different objects, depicting traditional beliefs in life after death. The “Fantasy Coffins” of Teshie Nungua have been featured in National Geographic and can be found in museums and galleries worldwide.

Later, continue to Akosombo, in the Volta Region.

Day 4 Volta Region

After breakfast there is a short drive to the cruise port where will board the cruise on the largest man-made lake in the world, the Lake Volta. Aboard the “Dodi Princess” you will dance to the sounds of live highlife music played by the cruise boat resident band. Enjoy the calm of the lake and bask in the beauty of the mountain scenery. Lunch will be served on board.

Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 Volta Region / Mampong/ Kumasi

After breakfast, depart to Kumasi. Stop at the Shai Hills Reserve, which combines nature conservation, rich cultural interest and archaeological sites. You will likely see West Africa’s big game: antelopes, bushbucks, kobs, baboons, monkeys and several bird species including the crested eagle ground hornbill blank bellied bustard and more.

You will have the opportunity to learn about the various artifacts that have been found in this area which is the homeland of the Krobo people.

Continue to Kumasi.

Overnight at Noda Hotel or Similar

Day 6 Kumasi

After breakfast we will visit the Kumasi Central Market, the largest open-air market in West Africa, where more than 10.000 traders ply their wares. Continue with visits to the Ashanti craft villages starting with the Woodcarving Village of Ahwiaa, known for the talented craftsmen who fashion royal stools, walking sticks and fertility dolls. Our second stop is the village of Ntonso where Artisans hand-stamp patterns on cotton cloth to make Adinkra textiles that are worn for funerals and other solemn occasions. Our third village is Bonwire where the famous Kente cloth is handmade on looms, in a time-honored tradition passed down through generations.

This afternoon visit the home of Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the legendary female general who led Ashanti Armies against British Forces in 1900.

Day 7 Kumasi--Buabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary

Depart Kumasi for the village of Buabeng Fiema where Sacred Monkeys live in harmony with the community. You will likely interact with the monkeys.

In the evening drive to Lake Bosomtwi where you may cruise on the lake.

Day 8 Kumasi / Cape Coast

After breakfast, before departing Kumasi, the realm of the ancient Ashanti Kingdom of Gold, visit the facilities of Anglo-Ashanti Goldfields.  

Leave for Cape Coast. En route, stop at a village to interact with the villagers and learn about their culture and daily activities.

Continue to Cape Coast.

Day 9 Cape Coast

After breakfast we will visit (Elmina Castle) Fort Sao Jorge de Elmina – the site of the first European contact with West Africa when the Portuguese landed here in 1471. Elmina Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built in 1482 and is probably the first European structure in sub-Saharan Africa. The castle was also used as a Slave Prison.

After your tour of the castle, you will have a guided tour through the ancient town of Elmina. At the harbor you will see the colorful fishing canoes getting ready to go to sea for another night’s task of fishing.

After lunch, continue to Cape Coast Castle and the Castle Museum for a guided tour. Cape Coast Castle is a restored UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was one of the departure points for Africans being sent to the Americas in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The castle is home to the infamous Door of No Return and was once the seat of the British Colonial administration until 1877 when the capital was moved to Accra.

Day 10 Cape Coast/ Accra

After breakfast, drive from Cape Coast to Accra stopping at Kakum National Park Kakum Park is one of Ghana’s most famous parks. Though it is unlikely you will see any of the mammal species, birds are plentiful.

Kakum is also home to Africa’s only aerial walkway through the tree canopy, a 1000-ft long, seven-bridge walkway with viewing platforms that reaches heights of over 150 ft above ground.

After, return to Accra. Visit Makola Market to see first hand one aspect of Ghanaian women's contribution to the development of Ghana.

Just how good are you at bargaining? Find out this afternoon when you visit the Arts and Crafts market where you will have the opportunity to test your newly acquired bargaining and trading skills against the vendors.

Unbelievable prices can be secured for souvenirs and other products but you must bargain.
