Panafest 20th Anniversary Celebration, 10 Days


Day 1 ACCRA, GHANA - Saturday, July 21, 2012

Arrive Accra, meet assist and transfer to Hotel. This evening there is orientation which includes a discussion on Ghanaian history and culture. Afterwards, there is a welcome dinner with entertainment. There will be a fashion show and tailors and dressmakers from whom you can order custom made outfits will be in attendance.

Day 2 ACCRA - Sunday, July 22, 2012

After breakfast go on a full day City Tour of Accra, highlights will include:

 

  • The W.E.B. Du Bois Center honoring the life of one of the most prominent Pan-Africanists who chose to live and work in Ghana.
  • The Independence Square, Accra’s open-air ceremonial grounds where all national celebrations are held.
  • Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Museum, a tribute to Ghana’s first President. This park, formally called the Polo grounds, is where Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declared the independence of Ghana. The remains of Dr. Nkrumah as well as that of his wife rest on this premise. You will see various personal items used by Osagyefo, as well as books he authored together with several of his personal belongings.

Day 3 ACCRA / KUMASI - Monday, July 23, 2012

After breakfast drive to Kumasi, The Capital of the Ashanti Kingdom. Stop at Aburi Botanical Gardens overlooking the coastal plain at an elevation of 1,200 – 1,500 ft. above sea levellearn about the cultural and medicinal importance of the trees in these gardens.

Day 4 KUMASI - Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Full day Tour of Kumasi visit Manhiya Palace, which remains in use by the Asantehene (the ruler of the Ashanti people) today and houses a small historical museum. At Manhyia Palace, disputes are still settled in accordance with centuries-old customs where the King has the final word. In the afternoon visit the Okomfo Anokye Sword, an important symbol of Ashanti unity that marks the spot where the Golden Stool descended from the sky and has been in place for 300 years. Legend says the Ashanti Kingdom would collapse should the sword ever be removed

Day 5 KUMASI - Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Visit Ashanti craft villages. Learn how the talented craftsmen fashion royal stools, walking sticks and fertility dolls from wood. Observe up close the creation of the adinkra cloth which is worn for funerals and other solemn occasions. Later visit Bonfire, where you will discover how the kente weavers create the famous kente cloth, which is handmade on looms in a time-honored tradition.

Day 6 KUMASI/CAPE COAST - Thursday, July 26, 2012

After breakfast, depart Kumasi to Cape Coast. En-route, stop at Assin Manso, the burial site of two former slaves from the U. S. and Jamaica whose remains were re-interred in August 1998 during Ghana's first Emancipation Day Celebration. Visit the "Slave River" where captured Africans were washed before being confined in the Slave Castles to await shipment to the Americas and the Caribbean. Later, in the evening after arriving in Cape Coast, enjoy the PANAFEST activities and Emancipation celebration

Day 7 CAPE COAST - Friday, July 27, 2012

After breakfast, your journey takes you to Cape Coast Castle, a restored UNESCO World Heritage site. Once the seat of the British Colonial administration, this castle is home to the infamous Door of No Return, one of the most vivid reminders of the colonists' slave trade. In the afternoon tour Elmina Castle, also a UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1482. This castle was the first European structure in sub-Saharan Africa.

 

Later in the day, PANAFEST activities continue.

Day 8 CAPE COAST - Saturday, July 28, 2012

Continue Panafest Celebrations, visit the Panafest Village Expo/Bazaar, and attend a Traditional Naming Ceremony.

Day 9 CAPE COAST - Sunday, July 29, 2012

Early morning drive to Kakum National Park, one of West Africa's surviving tropical rain forests. Extending over 360sq km, Kakum is the home to over 40 large mammals and 400 bird species as well as many species of butterflies, flora and fauna. The most popular attraction is the Canopy walkway, which is made up of seven bridges extending 330m, hanging 30m (100 feet) above the forest floor. Choose between a 2 km nature walk through this forest to discover the wide variety of exotic floral species and the medicinal values they offer, or take a walk on the canopy walkway.

 

Later, the celebration continues at PANAFEST.

Day 10 ACCRA/DEPART - Monday, July 30, 2012

After breakfast return to Accra; with a stop at The Village of Abandze, the Ancestral Hoome of Louis Armstrong, and the famous American jazz musician. Those who ordered custom made outfits will go for fittings and adjustments. Farewell dinner in Accra, transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
