Day 1 Accra, Ghana

Arrive Accra, meet assist and transfer to Hotel. This evening there is orientation which includes a discussion on Ghanaian history and culture. Afterwards, there is a welcome dinner with entertainment. There will be a fashion show and tailors and dressmakers from whom you can order custom made outfits will be in attendance.

Day 2 Accra

After breakfast begin the city tour of Accra and vicinity. You will drive through the administrative and economic districts of Accra, the capital of Ghana. This 128-year-old city has a blend of colonial and modern architecture that summarizes her history.

We will visit the W.E.B. Du Bois Center honoring the life of one of the most prominent Pan-Africanists who chose to live and work in Ghana.

Visit Independence Square, Accra's open-air ceremonial grounds where all national celebrations are held. Continue to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and museum, a tribute to Ghana's first President. This park, formally called the Polo grounds, is where Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declared the independence of Ghana. The remains of Dr Nkrumah as well as that of his wife rest on this premise. You will see various personal items used by Osagyefo, as well as books he authored together with several of his personal belongings.
This evening there is a welcome activity.

Day 3 Accra

This morning we will visit the University of Ghana, Legon. It is Ghana's premier centre of higher education. The distinctive buildings of Japanese architectural design are set amongst elegant tree-lined gardens. You would be taken to the great hall area of the University and have a panoramic view of the city of Accra popularly referred to by students as Accra by night.

This afternoon, we will visit a local casket making shop to see a collection of caskets carved in the shape of different objects, depicting traditional beliefs in life after death. The "Fantasy Coffins" of Teshie Nungua have been featured in National Geographic and can be found in museums and galleries worldwide.

Day 4 Accra - HoHoe, Volta Region

Travel from Accra through the Volta Region to the village of Tafi Atome where you will visit the Tafi Monkey Sanctuary (a sacred grove). Tafi Atome is the home of Mona and Patas monkeys. These monkeys are found in a remnant patch of forests, which has survived fire and human disturbance to thrive as a sanctuary for these monkeys, which are regarded as sacred by the villagers and are protected from human disturbance. You will have the rare and exciting experience of witnessing these endangered animals in large numbers living in close proximity to humans. From Tafi, you will drive onwards to the Wli Waterfalls, which is the largest waterfall in Ghana. On route to the waterfall, you will hike through the lush greenery of the Agumatsa Forest Reserve where you will cross the same river eleven times before reaching the breathtaking falls.
The evening is at leisure for group activities.

Day 5 Hohoe - Akosombo

After breakfast, travel to Akosombo Port to cruise on the largest man-made lake in the world, the Lake Volta.
Aboard the "Dodi Princess", you will enjoy the sounds of live highlife music played by the cruise boat resident band. Enjoy the calm of the lake and bask in the beauty of the mountain scenery and surrounding.

After the cruise, take a picturesque drive to the cradle of hydro electricity in Ghana, to tour the famous Akosombo Hydro-electric Dam. The dam is specifically located within the Akosombo gorge, on the Volta river. The construction of the dam resulted in the flooding of the Volta River Basin, and it subsequently created Lake Volta. This resultant lake is the largest man-made lake in the world and covers about 3.6% of Ghana's total land area.

After breakfast, depart to Mole. First, arrive in Tamale late afternoon where you will have a brief view of the city of Tamale where you will see the local smock being made at the cultural centre.

On the way to Mole stop at Larabanga and visit the Larabanga Mosque and mystery stone -

Continue to Mole National Park (15minutes)

Enjoy an evening safari by trekking in Mole National Park for roughly two hours.

After breakfast at Mole Park, checkout and depart for Damongo where you will visit the palace of the Yogbonwura - the seat of the paramount chief of the Gonja traditional area.

Have a brief talk about the Gonja traditional system of inheritance that has been maintained over the years where chiefs are promoted gradually until they reach the ultimate seat of the Yogbonwura.

Depart for Kumasi arriving in the evening.

This afternoon, visit Manhyia Palace and Museum, to obtain firsthand information on the legacies of the Ashanti kingdom. A regal history that dates back to 1700 is told with relics and artifacts. Enjoy a drive through the city with monuments dedicated to the memory of the great Ashanti people.

This afternoon, visit the National Cultural Center, which features the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and various studios of the brass makers, potters and batik makers. In the afternoon, visit the three famous craft villages in Ashanti - Ahwiaa, the wood carvers' village, Ntonso, the home of Adinkra and Bonwire, the Kente weaving village. You will have the opportunity to see how African sculptures are carved, how Adinkra wax prints are made and how the famous Kente cloth is woven using an amazing local technology.

This evening there is a cooking workshop, after which you will be able to impress your friends and family for years to come with the traditional recipes you will learn. You will learn to make fufu, ground nut soup, red- red, and palava sauce. Sample some of Ghana's most popular foods. *NOTE: All dishes are made with purified water.

Day 11 Kumasi - Cape Coast

After breakfast, check out and depart for a scenic drive to the Central Region where you will visit the infamous Forts, Castles and Slave Dungeons of Ghana. History will unfold the story of the slave trade, which the impact is still felt beyond the shores of Africa today.

On the way you will stop at Assin Manso, the burial site of two former slaves from the U. S. and Jamaica whose remains were re-interred in August 1998 during Ghana's first Emancipation Day Celebration. You will see the "Slave River" where captured Africans were washed before being confined in the Slave Castles to await shipment to the Americas and the Caribbean.

Day 12 Cape Coast/Elmina

After breakfast, your journey takes you to Cape Coast Castle, a restored UNESCO World Heritage site. Once the seat of the British Colonial administration, this castle is home to the infamous Door of No Return, one of the most vivid reminders of the colonists' slave trade. In the afternoon tour Elmina Castle, also a UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1482. This castle was the first European structure in sub-Saharan Africa.

After your tour of the castle, you will have a guided tour through the ancient town of Elmina. At the harbor you will see the colorful fishing canoes getting ready to go to sea for another night's task of fishing. This is a perfect opportunity for the photographers in the group.

Day 13 Cape Coast - Accra

Early morning, we will return to Accra. On the way visit Kakum National Park. Kakum is one of Ghana's most famous parks. Take a brief walking tour on the forest floor where you will learn how our ancestors lived in the forest. See birds, butterflies, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the forests over 40 species of mammals including monkeys and the reclusive forest elephant. Proceed to the canopy walk. Kakum is home to Africa's only aerial walkway through the tree canopy, a 1000 foot long and seven-bridge walkway with viewing platforms that reach heights of over 150 feet above ground.we will stop to visit the village of Abandze, the ancestral home of Louis Armstrong, the famous American jazz musician.

This evening, we will visit the Noyam African Dance Institute where you will experience a wonderful traditional dance performance by some of Ghana's best drumming and dance ensembles. They will soothe and excite you with their music, entertain you with their dance. The institute's focus is the training of dancers and the continuing development of traditional and contemporary African dance in Ghana. After the cultural experience that welcomes you into the Institute, you will have the opportunity to participate in a drumming and dancing workshop led by the institutes skillful African dance scholars. Use this opportunity to learn about some of the traditional dances in Ghana.

Day 14 Accra

 

Depart for a scenic drive to Ada on the Eastern fringes of the Greater Accra Region. Visit the village of Azizanya on the estuary of the Volta River. The Elders of the village will take you through their fishing culture and explain how the estuary which has undercurrent of over seven miles per hour is navigated. Spend the rest of the day engaging in one many water sports on the Volta River.

Day 15 Wrap-Up / Depart Accra

 Aburi Botanical Gardens

Visit Mampong Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine. The center conducts research in the use of plant medicine in the cure of various ailments. Then travel to Aburi Botanical Gardens: Aburi Botanical Gardens was established as an agricultural research station and convalescent home for the British Colonial Administration. You will learn about the cultural and medicinal importance of the trees in these gardens.

This evening transfer to the airport for the return flight.
