African Choral Festival in Ghana - 7 Days


Day 1 Thursday, March 8, 2012 - ACCRA, GHANA

Arrive Accra, meet assist and transfer to Hotel.This evening there is a welcome dinner with entertainment. There will be an orientation which includes a discussion on Ghanaian history and culture; a fashion show with tailors and dressmakers from whom you can order custom made outfits will be in attendance.

Day 2 Friday, March 9, 2012 - ACCRA

Opening Ceremony, Rehearsal and Tour

After breakfast, you will be transported to the National Theatre for the Opening Ceremonies. One of Ghana’s most renowned choirs will perform. Following the Ghanaian choir’s concert, you will rehearse for the Mass Sing Concert under the direction of Dr. André Thomas, Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Choral Music Education at Florida State University. After the rehearsal, there will be a reception where you will have the opportunity to meet members of several choirs attending the festival. In the afternoon, take a city tour of Accra.

Day 3 Saturday, March 10, 2012 - ACCRA

 Festival Mass Sing Concert

After breakfast you will be transported to the National Theatre for a morning rehearsal with Dr. André Thomas.  This afternoon you will continue the city tour of Accra including visiting the craft markets where great’s bargains wait for hand-carved masks, fabrics, glass beads, musical instruments, silver jewelry among other items. Choirs may also attend a choral workshop at the University of Ghana which focuses on Ghanaian choral works.


This evening, after dinner, you will be transported to the National Theatre for the African Choral Festival’s Mass Sing Performance. In addition to the Mass Sing, each guest choir including choirs from other African countries will perform individually. This will be truly a one-of- kind performance.

Day 4 Sunday, March 11, 2012 - SUNDAY WORSHIP / CAPE COAST CASTLE PERFORMANCE

Following breakfast, you will be transported to a church for the Sunday Services. You will experience the incredible spirituality of Ghanaians. Church service in Ghana is a celebration with singing, dancing and worship, accompanied by traditional instruments.  This will be a morning to remember.
 
After lunch at one of Accra’s better restaurants, you will depart to Cape Coast in Ghana’s central region. After checking into your hotel, the afternoon is at leisure until dinner.  After dinner this evening, join other guest choirs in the open air courtyard at Cape Coast Castle to perform for a vast local audience. Each choir will sing individually in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its jarring combination of aesthetic beauty and a towering symbol of historic tragedies.   Built in the 15th century, the castle was one of the primary holding areas used during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

Day 5 Monday, March 12, 2012 - CAPE COAST CASTLE- KAKUM NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, visit Cape Coast Castle and the Castle Museum for a guided tour. Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was one of the departure points for Africans being sent to slavery in the Americas. The castle is home to the infamous "Door of No Return".
 
Following the Castle Tour, you will visit Kakum National Park. Kakum is one of Ghana's most famous parks. Take a brief walking tour on the forest floor before proceeding to the canopy walk. Kakum is home to Africa's only aerial walkway through the tree canopy, a 1000 foot long, seven-bridge walkway with viewing platforms that reach heights of over 150 feet above ground.

 
 This evening we will travel to the nearby village of Mesomagor and see the Bamboo Orchestra at their musical best. The youth at the village of Mesomagor have revived a traditional art, by performing with bamboo percussion instruments to music and dance. This is a contagious dance performance you have not seen anywhere else.

Day 6 Tuesday, March 13, 2012 - CAPE COAST- KUMASI

After breakfast, we will travel to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region.   On arrival in Kumasi we will visit  Manhiya Palace which was  built by the British to accommodate  Asantehene, Prempeh 1, (ruler of the Ashanti people) when he returned from exile in the Seychelles to resume residence in Kumasi. It was used by the Ashanti kings until 1974 and now serves as a museum, containing a range of items relating to the Ashanti Kingdom. You will also visit the nearby Okomfo Anokye Sword, an important symbol of Ashanti unity that marks the spot where the Golden Stool “descended from the sky” and has been in place for more than 300 years. Legend says the Ashanti Kingdom would collapse should the sword ever be removed.

Day 7 Wednesday, March 14, 2012 - KUMASI-ACCRA-DEPART

After breakfast, complete your tour of Kumasi and visit the Ashanti craft villages. Early afternoon return to Accra, arriving in time to refresh and relax before you are transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
