This morning drive south across the Maasai Steppe to Tanzania's fourth largest park and one of it's most scenic. Giant baobab trees and umbrella acacias dot the rocky hills and verdant valleys. Wildlife is drawn to the Tarangire River, a year-round source of water for huge herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes of all shapes and sizes, gazelles, and the predators - lions, leopards and hyenas. Tarangire is also well known for its many bird species including impressive raptors. Enjoy the remarkable surroundings at the secluded comfortable camp.  After a delicious lunch prepared by first rate chefs, relax before the afternoon wildlife viewing. Later this evening, savor the seclusion and rustic beauty of your first night deep in the heart of Africa. The sound of nearby wildlife should lull you to sleep.

After lunch in the camp, depart for the Ngorongoro Highlands to an old coffee estate, Gibbs Farm, which is a favorite stop. Day 6 Gibbs Farm - Ngorongoro

Today we depart for the Ngorongoro Highlands. On the way, we stop at Olduvai Gorge where the Leakey family made their remarkable discovery of Zinjanthropus 'Man'. Take time to visit the small but informative Olduvai Gorge museum before continuing to higher elevations, finally attaining the rim of the world's largest unbroken caldera, commonly referred to as "Africa's Garden of Eden". Only 10 miles across, the Crater is home to nearly every major African mammal imaginable - huge bull elephants, black rhinos, herds of buffalo, wildebeest , gazelle, hippos, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, warthogs, zebras, baboons, monkeys... and others. With mini-ecosystems ranging from acacia forests to savanna to soda lakes, Ngorongoro Crater is a year-round haven for wildlife, and the viewing is always spectacular. Here the animals have little to fear from humans, so close-up viewing is quite common. In addition to game drives on the crater floor, we have the opportunity to visit with our Maasai friends and learn about their fascinating pastoral lifestyle and colorful traditions.
